One out of ten travellers ignores malaria advice
At least one out of ten travellers goes to the tropics without protection against malaria.
Half of the Dutch travellers does nothing to avoid infection with hepatitis A.
These are the results of the Schiphol Survey, a yearly survey held among 2500 Dutch people
about travel habits. In the case they do bring malaria pills along to tropical countries, these are
not always the proper medication.
Intensivecare
Last year at least 8 Dutch people were infected with malaria in Gambia. A couple of them ended
up at the intensive care department, one patient died.
'Elderly people appear to be just as adventureous as younger ones at their ‘far away trips’’
says David Overbosch of the Travel Clinic Havenziekenhuis Rotterdam. ‘Whilst they are physically
more vulnerable and tend to get in touch with the local medical care faster. They run a higher risk
to be infected with diseases such as hepatitis B.’
Hepatitis A
Moreover, many people don’t think it’s necessary to protect themselves against hepatitis A, when
their holiday destination is closer to home, such as Turkey and Croatia.
Six out of ten travellers to these destinations decide not to vaccinate when travelling to
these destinations.
Would you like to get advice on which vaccinations are advised? See our website under Travel information/Vaccinations.
